Lookout to Sea More... Sat 7th June 9am-5pm

Join artists in residence and community participants aboard LV21 for a ‘Lookback’ and celebration of the series of three experimental, collaborative Lookout 21 projects combining local people’s heritage, dreams, passions and personal stories with different artforms.

Find out what happened when community representatives and artists across artforms were paired together and given the opportunity to take time to ‘Lookout’ and develop new artwork aboard LV21 on a variety of themes.

Awaken your senses with the human foghorn by Radioarts featuring Medway voices and help construct a portable fog horn to amplify the gathered sounds. Try your hand at soldering and morse code with Colin Turner; get immersed in Dizzy O’Dare’s site-specific radioplay voiced by the Play on Words Youth Theatre and inspired by Robin Neale’s photographs, artefacts and fascinating personal memories of life around Gillingham Pier; and join artists Wendy Daws and Underground Pearl to make wire portraits and window mosaics reflecting on their time aboard with the Kent Autistic Trust.

Whilst onboard you’ll also have front row seats and the best views in Medway for the annual Medway Barge Match. Watch the magnificent traditional Thames Sailing Barges start their match at Gillingham Pier at 9.15am and returning back to the finish line in the afternoon.

And onshore, parked next to LV21 on the pierside, you’ll find the Kent Baton, a converted 1950’s Airstream caravan, which has been traveling across Kent for the past three years inviting people to share local stories and sharing learning about the region’s past. In Medway, the Kent Baton presents One Day Works, a series of one-day art projects happening across the area during the Fuse festival in June. Please note: The renovation of the historic lightship is ongoing and as such some areas are not accessible. There are steep stairs and narrow passageways throughout the vessel. Please wear suitable, flat footwear.
